Welcome to CORE Obesity Research and Education at Queen’s University.
Founded in 2005, CORE was established in response to the need to address obesity and related co-morbid conditions as a major threat to public health. The World Health Organization and the Public Health Agency of Canada have identified obesity as one of today’s most pressing public health problems.
More than have of adult Canadians are overweight or obese and the prevalence of obesity in Canada has more than doubled in the past two decades.
Obesity is a leading risk factor for premature mortality and numerous chronic diseases. Obese individuals are twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease and osteoarthritis, 50% more likely to have a stroke and develop certain forms of cancer (e.g. colon & breast), and four times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes and hypertension compared to individuals with a normal weight.
